'Viorica Agarici' Festival

Dămienești, Bacău county

2022 - 03 July

The 'Viorica Agarici' Festival, held on July 3, 2022, between 09.00 - 22.00, in the courtyard of the Dămienești Secondary School in the village of Dămienești, Bacău county, was organized together with the Association Femeia Contează and Tinerii Dămienești.

We returned to our roots, in the village of Dămienești, the place where our heroine was born, the place where she spent her childhood vacations at the Morțun farm, but also the place where she met her future husband, Ion C. Agarici. Here we wanted to bring the women of the commune back together, for the first time, a little closer. To give them the opportunity and the context in which women can see an example of power starting from their own lands.

The venue wass not chosen by chance, Viorica Agarici being a supporter of the local educational infrastructure, founded the Călugăreni Primary School in 1919 and donated a considerable amount of money for the rehabilitation of the Drăgești Primary School in 1927. The Dămienești Secondary School is today closed and in a state of preservation.

The day began with a laying of wreaths at the bust of Viorică Agarici in the Roman Railway Station, then social activities and the sharing of experiences between 3 generations of women from the Dămienești commune were organized.

By the end of the day, the community got to know who Viorica Agarici was, and why the entire Romanian city was in a state of shock on July 3, 1941 through the screening of the documentary film dedicated to our heroine!

The event is organized within the project ‘GLORIA - feminism and strategic approach of gender equality’.

The project is implemented by Community Safety and Mediation Center Foundation in partnership with the Romanian Women's LOBBY Association, Foreningen HEDDA; Network of East-West Women; Bulgarian Platform of European Women's Lobby; Magyar Női Érdekérvényesítő Szövetség (Hungarian Women's Lobby) and benefits from a 249,943 euros grant from Active Citizens Fund Romania, programme funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA Grants Grants 2014 -2021: for more information visit www.eeagrants.org.
